History of Amsterdam 1 - History of Amsterdam 1 A city from nothing
History of Amsterdam 1 Books
Discover the fascinating history of Amsterdam, a relatively young city among the Dutch cities. Unlike older cities such as Dordrecht, Leiden, and Haarlem, urbanization in Amsterdam only began towards the end of the thirteenth century. The dam in the Amstel played a crucial role as a connecting factor between various small settlements on both banks of the river. By the middle of the fifteenth century, Amsterdam had blossomed into the richest merchant city of Holland.
Amsterdam emerged almost out of nowhere thanks to a strategically located and safe harbor. The city grew from a passive to an active trading place and became a center of industry, including the textile industry. This made Amsterdam attractive to immigrants, leading to rapid population growth and multiple city expansions. This growth brought complexity to the society, but also an increasing self-awareness among the citizens. The city administration strengthened its grip on the city with privileges and autonomy as the basis.
The city had strong social cohesion thanks to guilds and fraternities, which promoted solidarity and charity. Citizens were proud of their city, which they expressed in the unique militia paintings, a symbol of pride and brotherhood. However, in the sixteenth century, the Reformation brought division, resulting in tumultuous events such as the Anabaptist uprising of 1535 and the iconoclasm of 1566. Amsterdam eventually joined the Revolt, ushering in a new era.
This part came into being through the efforts of Marijke Carasso-Kok, Eef Dijkhof, Herman Kaptein, Paul Knevel, Bas de Melker, Henk van Nierop, Ben Speet, and Cornelis Verkerk. The image editing was managed by Nienke Huizinga and Ester Wouthuysen, with an introduction by E.O.G. Haitsma Mulier.
Experience the rich history of Amsterdam and discover how this city developed into a center of trade, culture, and solidarity. Dive into the past and let yourself be inspired by stories of pride and transformation. Order now and enrich your knowledge about the city that grew into an icon of Holland.
